Reddit – a social aggregation platform
There are many social media platforms out there, most are very well known, almost household names such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to name but a few. However, there are many more providing its users ways of sharing, such as Reddit. It’s name a play on words of I ‘read it’ on the internet.
Reddit was established in 2005 by university students and friends, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, who were room mates at the University of Virginia, USA. The concept was to create a media aggregation platform (aggregation relates to the accumulation and collation of other sources, including other social media platforms), that allows users to submit news, web content and links. Other users, known as redditors, can then upvote or downvote on the content in a bulletin board style system. Topics are broken down into what is called subreddits, created by redditors and such categories as gaming, business, science, movies and so on.
In 2006 Reddit was acquired by Condé Nast Publications (they're doing ok) and today has grown to over 234 million users, it is ranked as the 3rd most used website in the USA and is ranked 6th in the world according to Alexa rankings. Overall its membership is made up of 57% USA, 7.5% United Kingdom, 6.3% Canada and 29% from the rest of the world. It's clear reddit is not a platform to be dismissed.
Reddit’s tagline is ‘The front page of the internet’ a bold claim but valued at over $1.8 billion and with the above figures there's some substance to this. The simplicity of Reddit makes it popular, allowing users to subscribe to topics of interest (subreddits), sharing social and web content and self-promoting own posts, articles and web content too. Members receive karma for good shares and content as well as earning coins of which you can use to award good contributions to Reddit.
Reddit also offer a premium service that essentially is an ad free version, premium members are given 700 coins per month, and have access to an exclusive Reddit lounge for a monthly subscription of $5.99!
When it comes to using Reddit, it's important to understand the do’s and don’ts - common sense applies here:
- don’t post titles in all capitals
- don't complain about old stories
- don't roll people
- do share quality content
- do keep post titles factual - i.e. not misleading
- dorespect others and their opinions.
Reddit is a comprehensive source of information on the topics of your choosing, and also a great tool of getting exposure to your own company’s products and/or services, something we will be discussing in detail in our next post, explaining how businesses can utilise Reddit to promote themselves and raise brand awareness - watch this space!
